Moscow, once draped in Soviet symbols, has readily adopted the trappings of capitalism and is now replete with neon billboards and shopping malls. Decidedly the center of political and economic power, the capital now rivals St. Petersburg in culture and the arts.
The Contemporary Russia Program is hosted by the State University: Moscow Higher School of Economics (widely known as the Higher School, or Vyshka in Russian). Founded by a group of progressive economists and academics in 1992, the Higher School is widely recognized today as a leading institution for the study of economics, political science, business and history. More than 9,000 students are currently enrolled in the university’s 62 academic departments. Located in downtown Moscow, the university grounds include an extensive, modern library and more than ten research institutes and centers.
