Summer Russian Language Teachers Program

Summary

The American Councils Summer Russian Language Teachers Program offers qualified U.S. pre- and in-service teachers of Russian language and culture from elementary schools, high schools, and universities the opportunity to reach new levels of competency in Russian, and to experience firsthand the latest developments in the discipline. Advanced-level courses on Russian language, literature, and culture are led by distinguished faculty from Moscow State University's Department of Philology. The program is six-weeks long, and takes place from mid-June to early-August.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are currently serving as K-12- or university-level teachers of Russian language and culture, or graduate students who intend a teaching career.

Applications from K-12 teachers of Russian are especially encouraged.

 

Academics

Academics

The academic program is a total of 144 hours and is designed to accommodate the particular interests and needs of teachers of Russian, combining grammar and conversation courses with seminars in Russian culture, literature, and linguistics. Recent seminar topics have included:

  • Contemporary Russian Prose
  • Russia Today
  • Semantics and Complexities of Word Usage
  • Russian Musical Culture from the Beginning of the 19th Century to the Present
  • A Better Way to Say It -- Syntax and Synonyms
  • "The Golden Age of Russian Literature
  • "Russian Folklore and Folk Culture
  • "Contemporary Conversational Speech
  • "Using Verbal Aspect

Classes are held four days per week; the fifth day is reserved for optional excursions, or for doing research in the library.

Full-time American resident directors oversee the academic program and cultural program; assist participants in academic, administrative, and personal matters; and serve as a liaison between university faculty, administrators, and participants.

The Summer Russian Language Teachers Program takes place on the campus of Moscow State University (MGU) -- the leading university in Russia. Moscow State has a student body of more than 20,000 in departments of all major disciplines, and offers the Russian equivalents of the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Participants are hosted by Moscow State's Philological Department.

Funding for the Summer Russian Language Teachers Program is provided through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad). Finalists must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are currently employed as teachers of Russian language or culture at the K-12 or university-level, or who are graduate students preparing to become teachers of Russian language or culture.

Twelve finalists will be selected to receive program funding from the US Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays).

Finalists will each receive:

  • round-trip international airfare from Washington, D.C. to Moscow, Russia
  • housing in the Moscow State University dormitory
  • tuition and fees at Moscow State University
  • weekly cultural excursions and a weekend trip to the Golden Ring
  • Russian visa
  • medical insurance
  • ten graduate hours of academic credit through Bryn Mawr College
  • a stipend of $180 per week

Finalists are responsible for:

  • a $970 administrative fee*
  • the cost of domestic transportation to Washington, D.C.
  • incidentals

*Finalists are expected to pay an administrative fee to help cover costs that are not included in the Fulbright-Hays grant. The grant does not cover any program or administrative expenses incurred in the U.S. such as visa processing costs, health insurance or pre-departure orientation activities.

Housing and Meals

Housing and Meals

Participants live on campus at Moscow State University (MGU) in university dormitory housing with other program participants, and receive a weekly stipend of $180 to offset the cost of meals.

Program Dates: June 19 - August 5, 2013

Participants will be required to attend a pre-departure orientation in Washington D.C. on June 18-19 prior to departure.
